I am aware of the fact that most of you know Sudan from the worst
side: Darfor crisis, war with South, poverty.
Darfor...everybody heard the news about "the biggest humanitarian
crisis on Earth", " Janjaweed Arabs killing Christians"... in general
murdering, raping, stealing...and of course another picture pops out
in our head: skinny kids surrounded by flies, dying of malaria and so
on.
OK. That's what we know from TV.
In reality, situation in Darfor is not as dramatic as shown by media.
I have firsthand information from Doctors Without Borders who worked
there for a long time.
On the other hand, did you ever know that 2 million refugees live in
Khartoum, without any recognition or international help?
Paradoxically, those in Darfor at least receive help and attention.
Refugees in Khartoum are less lucky...
Nevertheless..I won't focus on the worst sides of Sudan only.
Sudan is...beautiful. YES!
Natural beauty of Sudan, with Red Sea, over 200 pyramids, mountains
and Nile river.
Sudan is home of the oldest ancient civilization - Nubia. Nubia has
been inhibited more than 60 000 years ago (!). If you would like more
information regarding archaeological discoveries in Nubia, polish team from Warsaw University and Gdansk University are one of the most persistent in finding and saving amazing artifacts from the North Sudan.
South Sudan, on the other hand, is full of amazing wild animals: 8000 elephants, 800 000 Koba gazelles, Monagalla gazelles, 8900 buffaloes, giraffes, crocodiles and hippopotamuses. I wish South invest in tourism and open itself for Safari tours. It would certainly be one of the most popular destinations in Africa.
The reality is... well. Tragic.
In my next post I'm going to update you on South Sudan news, why Al-Bashir still feels so powerful and why Sudanese will (probably) never take part in so called Arab Spring.
